Following the failure on the part of the authorities to arrest those
responsible for the assault of a private bus operator, all private buses
operating on Galle Road have gone on strike today (June 4), President
of the Private Bus Owners Association, Gemunu Wijeratne said.
He
stated that the two employees of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB)
who were responsible for the assault had yet to be taken into custody
while Police had claimed that there was little cooperation from the
authorities at the Ratmalana Depot to help find the culprits.
The
private buses operating from Panadura began the strike this week before
being joined by the bus operators of Kalutara, Matugama, Moratuwa and
Aluthgama while the bus operators on the 154, 176 and 163 routes joined
the strike last morning. All buses operating on Galle Road have joined
the protest from today.
