Proposed LPBOA bus strike called off

The proposed bus strike by the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association scheduled to take place tomorrow (June 27) has been called off, President of the association Gamunu Wijeratne confirmed during a media briefing today.

However majority unions had not supported the strike with three bus operators’ associations stating that they will not allow such action to be taken.

Following the bus fare hike of 7.6% this week, President of the Private Bus Owners Association Gemunu Wijeratne stated that a fare increase of 15% was needed while the previous minimum bus fare of Rs.6 should be increased to Rs.8.

However, three other associations expressed their disapproval of Wijeratne’s threat to go on strike while stating that they will not extend their support to any such move.
