All arrangements have been finalized to conduct the much looked forward to motor racing event of the year, the Gajaba Suprcross, organized by the Gajaba Regiment Centre in Saliyapura to be held at the Saliyapura motor racing track in Anuradapura on August 28.
The Gajaba Supercross which is the tenth in the series is being sponsored by S.G. Sons International (Pvt) Ltd with CEAT as the co-sponsor. This was revealed by Major Chagi Gallage at a press briefing held at the NOC auditorium recently.
Major General Gallage briefing the media emphasized that the liberation of the north and east have given openings to organize sports events for the public in these areas.
“The atmosphere is now good and we look forward to give the people in the area to enjoy the much needed freedom they have now having undergone hardships during the three decade ethnic war,” he said.
The meet will see top riders in both the categories brushing shoulders for supremacy. The cynosure of all eyes will be the Super Car event which has the top drivers in the calibre of Aravinda Premadasa, Dinesh Deheragoda and young Pasindu Peiris in the fray.
Aravinda, a veteran and last years champion in this particular event, will go all out to retain the title this year too. But he will face stiff opposition from the other drivers.
The emergence of young, up and coming driver Pasindu Peiris, has sent a warning to his seniors of what could be expected of him in the future. He will be one of the main contenders.
Pasindu has shown that he is a driver to take note of, and he has shown his capabilities. Likewise Deheragoda who has been in the back seat for sometime is now coming back to form and he too for sure will be in the reckoning.
The Gajaba Supercross is not only about entertainment to the competitors and the spectators but is regarded and seen as a worthy project for the upliftment of the infrastructure and facilities to soldiers who sacrificed their life to save their mother country from the terrorist.
All these are achieved with success from the funds generated from the Gajaba Supercross which was especially introduced in the year 1998.
The organizers are expecting over 150 entries in both the motor bikes and motor car categories where 24 events have been lined to be worked off on that day.
