Pasindu, Shehan steel the show
Powered by his usual gusto and never say die attitude, Pasindu Peiris
stole the limelight at Gajaba Supercross 2011, at Saliyapura,
Anuradhapura, on Sunday. Pasindu won both SL-GT Cars up to 3500 CC races
with a considerable ease and clinched two runner-up awards in the Group
SL-H cars up to 1600 CC events. Sponsored by Exide, provided lavish
excitement to a roaring crowds gathered in thousands to witness the
battle between men and machines.
Aravinda Premadasa was a notable absentee in the super car event due to a technical failure of his car but the stocky driver was moving between paddocks and the winners, with a gentle smile on his face. When asked why he is not competing, Aravinda was simply saying ´I´ve got an engine problem yesterday´. He has won many events on these kind of races and had no worries over missing one.
It looked that rising star, Shehan C. Adhikari is gearing up to take the baton from his seniors with three easy wins in Motor Cycle events. The lad, who still rides under 16 categories, won both of Group MX – Motocross Bikes up to 85 CC events and Group MX – Motocross Bikes up to 125 CC events.
He showed great skill and character as he fought hard with a well experienced Shanaka Sandaruwan who was riding a 150 CC Honda CR, against Adhikari´s 85 CC Honda CR.
The biggest hope of the spectators, Gayan Sandaruwan, kept his fans on toes with a classy win in the Group MX – Motocross Bikes up to 125 CC round one. He was closely followed by the two Indians, K. P. Aravind and C. S. Santhosh. However, the in the second round of the same event, the two Indians took the lead from the first lap and never allowed Gayan to go pass them.
The incident of the day was Upulwan Serasinghe´s car rolling upside down. The Ford Laser specialist, Serasinghe won the SLN Cars Ford Laser/Mazda 1300 CC event easily before going out of the competition in the 1500 CC event. The man, who held the pole position in the 1500 CC event, first had a clash with Lalin Kirinde from 500 meters of the first lap. Seconds later, Upulwan was hit by Chaminda Weerasooriya and his car slipped out of the track with four wheels on top.
The race was stopped and restarted after clearing the track but without ´Sera´ and Kirinde, where Chaminda Weerasooriya had an easy win. Sampath Kumara won both of the Street Trail events for Standard/Modified motor cycles while Suraj Perera foxing Thusith Gunasekara in the Super Motard up to 450 CC event with few yards to the checqured flag.
The
event was superbly organized and conducted by Gajaba regiment in
association with SLARDAR (Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers And
Riders) The next SLARDAR event is scheduled to be held at Seegiriya in
the first week of October.
