Sri Lankans and foreigners will have the rare opportunity of engaging in
sporting events along the Southern Expressway today and tomorrow before
it is opened to vehicular traffic on November 27.
Deputy Highway’s Minister Nirmala Kotelawala said cricket, elephant
races, volleyball, cycling and a marathon are among the several events
that have been lined up from 2.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. on each of the two
days at all the interchanges of the highway, which are at Kottawa,
Kahathuduwa, Galanigama, Dodangoda, Welipenna, Kururndugahahetekma,
Baddegama, Pinnaduwa.
The marathon will start at Kahathuduwa interchange while the elephant race will be held at the Bandaragama interchange.
“Limited overs’ six-a-side cricket matches will be played with the
participation of people from all the local councils surrounding the
interchanges. But anyone can join in and play cricket”, Mr. Kothalawala
said.
“A spectacular fireworks display will take place at the end of each day,” the minister said.
Disabled war heroes and well-known local artistes will attend the
events. Special art competitions dedicated to children will take place
at most of the interchanges.
Pirith chanting ceremonies will start from the Kottawa interchange at
8.30 a.m. today and will be continued at all the interchanges before the
