School van license issued

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) together with the motor traffic department has begun issuing licenses in the Western Province to operate school vans from January. NCPA Chairman Anoma Dissanayake said that school van operators in the Western Province, who do not have the license, will be taken off the streets when the new school term begins next month. The decision to issue a special license to operate school vans was taken last month following incidents of abuse of school children by some drivers and unsafe driving. So far 2,000 applications have been issued to school van operators seeking the new license, but Dissanayake is of the view that there are at least 3,000 school van operators in the Western Province. "If those who do not have the mandatory license operate schools vans in the Western Province from Next month action will be taken against them. Drivers below the age of 21, meanwhile, will not be given a license anyway," she said. The new license includes the finger print of the drivers and other vital information, the National Child Protection Authority said.
